About us

The Miris story begins with a traditional mustard recipe handed downthrough four generations of Sri-Lankan women.

A recipe which combines exotic blends of spices, fresh herbs, humble mustard seeds and the queen of spice, ‘Miris’ – meaning chilli in Sinhala.

My mother and mentor, Maryse, is the brain and heart behind each recipe. She learnt from her mother, grandmother and aunts, a traditional family where celebrations of food and cooking were the focal point of any festivity.

Although my life has been different from hers, I wanted to preserve my heritage. For this, I convinced her that we should share these recipes of celebration with the world.

As a result of creating Miris Products, there were cravings for knowledge of Sri Lankan cuisine, with clients asking for cooking classes. The journey continued with Sri Lankan cooking classes and the progression went to Culinary Tours of Sri Lanka.

In 2013, I took a small group of people to Sri Lanka, to discover the exotic food and flavours, culture, history and amazing landscape that is Paradise – Sri Lanka.

Since then, I have had the privilege of taking 5 more tours, one was a Women’s Tour in 2018.

As you all know the world came to a standstill in 2020 with Covid-19 pandemic. This affected the whole travel and tourism industry for at least 2 years. Before that Sri Lanka faced its own economic and political challenges in 2019 with the Easter Sunday political bombings and in April 2022 a huge economic crisis hit the country.

Now in 2023, the country through decades of struggle and turmoil is once again trying to raise its head. I recently visited Sri Lanka and spent 5 weeks travelling, meeting people, discovering so much and at the end came back with a feeling of hope and excitement to organize more Culinary Tours of my motherland.

Australia is my adopted mother, she has given me opportunities beyond measure, an education, a life and a family. Sri Lanka is my birth mother and there is always a place in my heart for her. When I visit Sri Lanka I am in awe of the people, humble beyond measure, their open hearts, big smiles, warm and friendly nature is infectious.

The rich history, the food and the culture are all the things that I would love to share with you on a Miris Trails Culinary & Cultural Tour.

I invite you to share in my journey and experiences through Miris Products, Sri Lankan Cooking Classes and now Miris Trails Culinary Tours – I guarantee you will come back for more…

Lots of love Sonali xxx
